Kiladangan’s bid to claim a seventh North Senior Hurling Championship remains on course after a rigorous test from a Toomevara side which looks full of promise, but will have to wait at least another season to earn the club a 34th North title in the grade.
Both sides were disposed by eventual champions Kilruane last year – Toome in the semi-final and Kiladangan in the decider – and although the latter seem a slightly more refined and experienced outfit, that didn’t stop Toome’s streak of youth from causing them problems last Friday evening.
It was one of youngest players in Kiladangan’s starting line-up, Billy Seymour, who opened proceedings after 32 seconds, controlling the first ball to fly towards stand-side corner before cutting in towards the centre and executing the shot perfectly off his left-hand side to send the ball over from 40 metres. He would later close proceedings with a similarly impressive score, but a lot would happen in between and before the game turned a minute old, Toome had restored parity via Robbie Quirke. A frantic first minute, with lots more to follow.
