Kilruane MacDonaghs had a successful opening defence of their North Senior Hurling Championship title as they defeated Silvermines with ease on Sunday evening.

Leading from start to finish, MacDonaghs were never in trouble and with six players getting on the scoresheet in the first half they went nine points in front by half time. The lead might have been greater but for the wides which reached eight by the changeover.

The winners took something of a back seat in the third quarter as Silvermines, without the suspended Jason Forde, cut the margin to six points but as soon as Conor Cleary grabbed the game’s only goal in the 54th minute, one felt the wind had gone out of Silvermines sails and MacDonaghs were on their way to a place in the quarter finals.

Kilruane operated without the injured Thomas Cleary while Sean McAdams was unavailable but were quickly off the mark after Cian Darcy had scored after ten seconds with Seamus Hennessey adding another point exactly a minute later.
