Timmy Hammersley

Tipperary hurler in contention for Irish Independent Sports Star of the Year

Former All Ireland hurling medalist Timmy Hammersley has been shortlisted for the Irish Independent sports star of the year 2018.

Hammersley who played an influential role in helping his club team Clonoulty-Rossmore to secure victory for the Tipperary senior hurling title for the first time since 1997 has said he is delighted to be the shortlisted.

However, Timmy faces some stiff competition from household names such as boxing legend Katie Taylor, rugby titan Johnny Sexton and athletics hero Phil Healy. Timmy is only one of two club players to make the short list and with the help of his county, club and the local community he could win the coveted title.

Hammersley says; “It is a public vote, and I’m hoping the people of Tipperary will get behind the local GAA player. It would be amazing to see a local club player taking the title because club level is what keeps the sport alive.”

Timmy scored 12 points for his underdog's club Clonoulty-Rossmore when they triumphed by 0-23 to 2-12 over Nenagh Éire Óg at Semple Stadium in the Tipperary senior hurling club championship.

Hammersley says; “Hurling is not just a passion it’s my life. It is in my DNA, and it has allowed me to excel as a person both professionally and socially. While it would be an incredible achievement to win sports star of the year, I would just be honoured to know that my club and my community are being talked about at a national level and in a positive way.”

Timmy currently works at SpunOut.ie as their Engagement and Participation Officer, Ireland’s leading youth information website created by young people, for young people. His role seeks to ensure young people are facilitated in taking up leadership roles within the organisation. He is also a leading advocate on many social and human rights issues such as his humanitarian work in Palestine and Calais, homelessness and working with young Irish people in marginalised communities.
