Nenagh dig deep to beat Clonoulty

Nenagh Eire Og 1-20

Clonoulty/Rossmore 1-18

It took some last-ditch defending by Nenagh Eire Og to ensure they took both points from a gripping County Senior Hurling Championship encounter with Clonoulty-Rossmore on Sunday.

Comfortable winners over Roscrea in the first round, Nenagh needed the points to put themselves in the driving seat in the group for a place in the knockout stages. This they achieved, albeit with considerable discomfort, and they should complete their round-robin schedule with an unblemished record when in the third round they engage a Mullinahone side that has lost both its games.

Both these sides entertain serious championship aspirations and while victory went to Eire Og, Clonoulty will feel that they had the chances to win. The consolation for Clonoulty is that as West champions they are guaranteed a place in the knockout stages of the county championship, irrespective of how their final game with Roscrea goes. In any event, both clubs still have their ambitions intact after a contest that gives them a better idea of how they are faring.

From the outset it was apparent that there was not a lot between the sides.
