Final stages of Nenagh street works

Work on the resurfacing of Nenagh's streets with a new and long-term durable surface is now reaching completion.
Tipperary Co Council has been busy resurfacing the town's streets throughout the summer. Most of the thoroughfares have been completed, including O'Rahilly St, the New Line, Church Road, Martyr's Road, Ashe Road, Sarsfield St, Silver St and St Conlon's Road. Further works are to be carried out on the Borrisokane Road and again at St Conlon's Road to bring this phase of the project to completion. The new surfaces complement those of Nenagh's main streets, which were resurfaced following Ervia's recently completed multi-utility project in the town. Ervia made a significant contribution towards the cost of the summer resurfacing scheme.
Director of Nenagh Municipal District Marcus O'Connor said the new surfaces are comprised of hard road asphalt, long-wearing material that will last for 15 to 20 years. The council is happy with the progress achieved over the summer, and while the works programme has continued into September, he pointed out that Church Road, O'Rahilly St and the New Line were completed before the schools reopened. Though there has been traffic disruption, Mr O'Connor made the point that this is short-term while the benefit of the new surfaces would last far longer.
The council has also started preliminary work on resurfacing the John's Lane Car Park in the centre of the town. More substantial aspects of this project will be completed in the coming months, including landscaping, new lighting and charge points for electric vehicles. 
The next major project coming up in the town will be the demolition of buildings at the junction of Mitchel St, Emmet Place and Sarsfield St. Aimed at improving safety and enhancing traffic flow at the junction, the contractor for this project will be on site at end of this month. It is envisaged that the demolition work will start in October. 
Mr O'Connor anticipated a three-month timeframe for the project but said the council would not be doing any disruptive street works in the run-up to Christmas, so the project would continue into the new year. A 17-space car park is to be developed at Emmet Place as part of the project.
