Seven drug driving arrests in Nenagh district

Seven motorists were arrested on suspicion of drug driving in the Nenagh Garda District over the bank holiday weekend.

Gardaí stepped up checkpoints throughout the district in a proactive response to a notable increase of such offences in 2020. It recently emerged that nationally there has been a 17% increase in detections of driving under the influence of an intoxicant in the first six months of the year - a total of 1,216 drug driving arrests – with most of the country in lockdown for three of those months and a 70% reduction in traffic on the roads.

Meanwhile, there were three home burglaries reported in the district last Thursday, one at Benamore, Roscrea; one at Portroe and one at Carrigahorig. A dog was injured in the course of the latter incident.

A boat engine was stolen at Coolbawn over the weekend. Gardaí are urging boat owners to be particularly wary of boat engine thefts at this time of year.

On Monday last, gardaí recovered a quad bike and trailer that had been stolen in an incident in Borrisoleigh last month. The stolen property was recovered in the Silvermines area and has been returned to the owner.

Also in the last week, a male was arrested for reportedly acting in a suspicious manner at Magcobar, Silvermines, in the early hours of Thursday last. The suspect has been charged with trespassing with intent to comit a crime.

Gardaí are also investigating an incident in which graffifi was drawn on a wall near a playing area at Borrisokane Community College. The incident is believed to have happened around midnight on Thursday.

Street CCTV footage is being examined in an investigation of damage caused to the door of a house on Kenyon St, Nenagh, overnight last Monday week. And damage was cuased to the windows of a car parked at Kilkeary last Thursday night.
