Beef Plan protest next week

Members of the Beef Plan Movement will hold a peaceful protest outside the Beef Summit, where Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed, Cormac Healy of Meat Industry Ireland, Tara McCarthy of Bord Bia and a range of other industry stakeholders will address beef and suckler farmers on the future of the sector.

The Beef Summit takes place at the Shearwater Hotel in Ballinasloe, Co Galway next Thursday, May 9th, and is organised by the Irish Farmers Journal. Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal Corley said that the group is calling on factories and retailers to increase prices “so farmers can live”.

The intention is for people who have tickets to go into the meeting after the protest. “We will be highlighting the unacceptable situation farmers are in. It is a regional protest but it is getting nationwide support, there’s a number going from Cork,” he said.

Mr Corley said that he is not sure of numbers for the yet but expects them to be “fairly substantial”. He also said that the group has established purchasing groups in 22 counties so far and that he is hoping to grow that number to 30 over the course of the year.
