Clinical Leadership Programme for Nurse and Midwife Managers Launched at UL Hospitals Group

A group of 24 nurse and midwife managers have commenced a Clinical Leadership Programme at UL Hospitals Group.

The participants, who are CNMs (clinical nurse manager) and CMMs (clinical midwifery manager) from across all six  sites in the Group, are being enabled to develop their leadership skills as individuals while building capacity within an organisation that caters for the healthcare needs of approximately 400,000 people in the MidWest. There are almost 4,200 employees at UL Hospitals Group, of whom approximately 1,700 are nurses/midwives.

Leadership, and specifically clinical leadership, is inextricably linked to the delivery of safe patient care and improved healthcare outcomes.

The 6.5 day programme has been delivered over a six-month period and will provide an opportunity for clinical nurse/midwifery managers to develop their leadership skills and knowledge. It includes core modules, practical tools, shadowing and completion of a ward-based project. The programme provides participants with the space to build networks and opportunities and to enhance their practices in leading care.

Prof Colette Cowan, CEO, UL Hospitals Group, said:  “I welcome all 24 participants on the programme and I invite you to lead with courage, to look forward to what we can achieve together to deliver care to patients at UL Hospital Group. We value the dedication and commitment shown every day by our staff, hence this programme will enable frontline managers structured time with their peers to develop their own and each other’s leadership capabilities.”

Margaret Gleeson, Chief Director of Nursing and Midwifery, UL Hospitals Group, outlined the relevance of the programme for clinical nurse and midwife managers and acknowledged the contribution of the internal working group who designed the programme in partnership with the Centre for Nurse and Midwifery Education.

“As you embark on your leadership journey, you will consider your values and discover your own leadership style, particularly in how you manage yourselves and your teams in safeguarding care at UL Hospitals Group,” Ms Gleeson said.

John Keane, Interim HR Director, UL Hospitals Group, said the programme emphasised the Group’s “commitment to developing leaders at all levels of the organisation where we continue to empower individuals, teams and society”.
