Action sought on CCTV impasse

Local representatives have called on Tipperary Co Council to follow the lead of Limerick in rolling out CCTV schemes for local communities.

Raising the matter at a meeting of Nenagh Municipal District, Cllr Ger Darcy (FG) was aware of issues around the new data protection legislation but said that Limerick Co Council has managed to introduced CCTV in its towns and villages. “If Limerick can do it, surely we can follow,” he said.

In support, Cllr Phyll Bugler (FG) called for a CCTV scheme to be implemented in Ballina, a town large enough to warrant such provision. Cllr Joe Hannigan (Ind) said Borrisokane is “crying out for CCTV”. Laois and Limerick have managed to introduce schemes in their communities in spite of the data protection legislation, he said.

Cllr Fiona Bonfield (Lab) also spoke of the CCTV success in Limerick, where she said the council had put monies aside over a number of years to set up schemes. Tipperary should contact Limerick Co Council about the matter, she suggested.
