Swift bird survey in Tipperary

A Swift bird survey of 86 towns and villages in Tipperary was completed over the summer months and a final report has been submitted to Tipperary Co Council.

This will be available shortly in the Heritage section of the council's website. Of the 86 towns and villages surveyed, Swifts were identified in 31, with nesting sites confirmed in 24. The highest number of nests recorded was in Clonmel 76 (this may be the highest nationally) followed by 27 sites in Cashel and Tipperary, and 26 in Nenagh.

Remaining towns had between one and 17 nests. The efforts of local groups including Tidy Towns and others who helped in this huge undertaking was a major factor in this report being so comprehensive. The report will form the basis of Swift-friendly actions in the county for the next number of years.
