Pollinator-friendly land in Thurles
Thurles Municipal District is delighted to announce that the elected members of the district at their May meeting approved a Pollinator Plan and Grass Mowing Plan for Thurles town.
The plan was developed by the municipal district in consultation with Tipperary Co Council Biodiversity Officer Ann Marie Fleming and Ecologist Anne Marie Mahon. A public workshop with Ann Marie Mahon on the draft plan was held in the Source Arts Centre on Saturday, May 10. The plan was then approved by the elected members at the May municipal district meeting.
Pollinator and Grass Mowing Plans are for the benefit of pollinators, while also satisfying objective 2 of the All-Ireland pollinator Plan 2021-2025: 'Making public land pollinator-friendly'.
The main aim of the plan for Thurles is to - Make more public land pollinator- friendly; increase the area of council land that is managed in a pollinator-friendly
way; make transport corridors more pollinator-friendly; make local communities more pollinator-friendly; track changes in pollinators on public land.
The plan will be monitored through project engagements with local community groups and schools so the benefit of the implementation of the pollinator plan can be assessed and verified. Sharon Scully, District Administrator, Thurles Municipal District states: "I very much welcome the approval of the Thurles Municipal District
Pollinator Plan and Grass Mowing Plan and would like to thank the members of Thurles Municipal District for their commitment and enthusiasm in recognising the very important role that pollinators play and by leading the way in setting an example for grass mowing techniques."
