Tipp masterclass from renowned fiddle player

Music Generation Tipperary is delighted to announce that they will be hosting a special one off masterclass for intermediate and advanced fiddle players with one of Ireland’s most well-known musicians, Co Clare fiddler Tara Breen, to celebrate World Fiddle Day 2022, on Saturday, May 21. Following on from the huge success of their celebration of World Fiddle Day last year, where they hosted acclaimed fiddle player Martin Hayes, this event marks another magnificent opportunity for young traditional musicians in Co Tipperary to receive tuition from some of Ireland’s top professional performers.

Tara Breen, currently a member of Stockon’s Wing and a regular performer with The Chieftains, is a highly talented multi-instrumentalist from Ruan, Co Clare. She has achieved All-Ireland titles on fiddle in every age category over the years, culminating with the All-Ireland Senior Fiddle Title in 2012. Tara is also an All-Ireland winner on the flute and saxophone. Tara has won 11 solo All Ireland Fleadh titles and 10 group All Ireland Fleadh titles. In 2011, Tara was chosen to play at Dublin Castle for the Queen of England during her State visit to Ireland. She was selected by Donal Lunny for the TV series, ‘Lorg Lunny’, which culminated in the band Ciorras. Ciorras recorded their debut album entitled ‘Ciorras’ in 2010. From there, she went on to join the Galician piper Carlos Núñez who she still travels extensively with. In 2014, Tara recorded an album with Conor Moriarty and Stephen Rooney, titled ‘The Trí Tones’ who were rewarded the title of ‘Album of The Year’ from Tradconnect. In 2014, she joined six-time Grammy award winning band, The Chieftains for their North American tour, and currently plays with them at various venues both at home and abroad. Tara joined the legendary band, Stockton’s Wing in 2015. In 2019, Tara recorded an album with Padraig Rynne, Conor Crimmins and Elaine Hogan entitled Avalla.

She also recorded a duet album, Nasc, with concertina player Padraig Rynne with guests such as Dónal Lunny and Jim Murray. Tara has also taught fiddle for the last 12 years, at various workshops and events, and also as a regular tutor for Music Generation Clare.

Speaking about the workshop, Music Development Officer with Music Generation Tipperary, Aidan O’Donnell, said: “We are really excited to work with one of the current masters of Irish traditional music in Tara Breen, and I think this is a massive opportunity to have a class, to listen and get advice from one of the best fiddle players of her generation. If I was a young fiddler again, I would definitely be signing up for this!

“We are also really happy to offer a beginners class as part of the event this year, and this will be facilitated by members of our Music Generation Tipperary team. There will also be a short ‘Meet the musician’ recital directly after the classes with Tara, where the young people can hear about how she started, the people who influenced her, and obviously hear her play some tunes too, and all at the great setting that is Brú Ború Heritage centre, Cashel.

“We are delighted to continue to offer these sorts of programmes and events to support the amazing work being done by young people and their teachers across Tipperary, especially during Covid-19, where not being able to meet up to play had a direct impact on the social nature of the arts, but with this being our first World Fiddle day in person, it is sure to be a special event.”

This workshop is a steal at €10 per participant. It will take place at Brú Ború Heritage centre, Cashel. Classes run from 10am to 12 30pm, with a short ‘Meet the Musician’ recital after the classes, to finish at 1pm.
