Wreath-laying ceremony recalls the sacrifice of Supt Curtin

A wreath laying ceremony took place at Friarsfield, just outside Tipperary Town, to commemorate the death of Supt John (Sean) Curtin, who was the highest ranking member of An Garda Síochána to be murdered in the line of duty during the one hundred years of the force.

Members of An Garda Síochána were in attendance.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Finn placed the wreath at the gates of Friarsfield House where Supt Curtin was ambushed and shot by the IRA on March 20, 1931. He died in the early hours of the following morning. Asst Supt Ciara Lee of Tipperary Town Garda Station said that in the centenary year of the formation of An Garda Síochána it was important that Supt Curtin’s life be remembered.

Supt Curtin’s extended family were guests of honour at the ceremony which was also attended by Chief Supt Derek Smart along with Superintendents and Inspectors, members of the Mounted Unit, the Ceremonial Unit, Garda Band, retired members and former Minister of State Martin Mansergh, the current co-owner of Friarsfield House where Supt Curtin paid the ultimate sacrifice.
