Readers of Image Magazine were asked to name their favourite Irish bookshops on Twitter.

Local bookshops make top ten

Bookshops in Nenagh and Cloughjordan have been named among the top ten in the country by Image Magazine.

The Nenagh Bookshop in Pearse Street and Sheelagh na Gig store in Cloughjordan came up trumps when the magazine asked people to name their favourite Irish bookshops on Twitter.

Writer Sophie Grenham, who conducted the online poll, said of the top bookshops: “We are blessed with dozens of beautiful, intimate spaces which are as important to communities as the local pub, post office or pharmacy. We should recognise them and reward them for their tireless work, bringing comfort and inspiration to all generations.”

The Nenagh Bookshop, a traditional independent store, is run by John and Catherine Ryan since 1997. The magazine noted that the couple recently extended their children’s book section, and have a great local interest section. The Sheelagh na Gig not alone offered books, but coffee, gifts and wholefood, the magazine states. “A great little base for the community in Cloughjordan, there’s an emphasis on fiction and non-fiction reads and staff are happy to direct you.”
