Hot to Trot in Thurles thriller

The career figures of Bobby Kelly’s Trotter (Boherna On Air/Fair Spin) would make for frustrating reading and it is fair to say that his win record does not truly reflect the smart latent abilities that have been evident to regular patrons at Thurles.

A lack of breaking talent has seen his career blighted with troubled race passages and a lack clear racing room has almost inevitably curtailed his efforts when repeatedly denied the opportunity to display his best form.

Reaching a career high of A1, he was for all intents and purposes robbed at that level last time when balked in the back-straight while racing in a menacing second position, another in a line of unlucky efforts. An ease to A3 did look very appealing on Saturday however and in a rare occurrence, the Killowney charge finally found clear racing room despite another poor start from Trap 3.

It was Tina Morrissey’s Bakerslane Blues who cut out the early running on the inside and led upon tackling the first bend but turning in fourth and without interference, Trotter had secured a run on the outside and displayed smart pace when rounding runners to join the pacesetter at the top of the back-straight. A competitive tussle to the third bend ensued but Trotter would take a narrow lead before turning when followed through by a strong staying rival. A protracted battle to the line thereafter would keep him up to his work but he gamely stayed well with three quarters of a length to spare in 29.61 (-40) and allowed to race in the same grade next time, just might improve on his career record of three wins if again securing clear passage.
