PARALYMPICS IRELAND WELCOMES ELECTION OF DENIS TOOMEY TO OCI EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Paralympics Ireland has welcomed the election of our nominee; Denis Toomey, to the Executive Committee of the Olympic Council of Ireland.

Additionally, we extend our congratulations to Swim Ireland CEO Sarah Keane on her election as President, and the other candidates chosen to represent the membership at Executive level.

As a member of the OCI Paralympics Ireland has previously voiced its desire to make a positive contribution to the Olympic movement in Ireland, similar to fellow National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) around the world, strengthening the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and IPC (International Paralympic Committee) strategic partnership that is in place since 2001.

Speaking about his election Denis Toomey said; “I am honoured to be elected to serve on the Executive alongside colleagues committed to change and a new direction for the organisation. I’m grateful for the vote of confidence from the sports and the trust they have placed in me. It is a new dawn for the Olympic Council of Ireland with new leadership now in place. Much work lies ahead in overhauling the corporate governance of the organisation, beginning with the implementation, in full, of the Deloitte report.”

President of Paralympics Ireland Jimmy Gradwell added; “With several candidates committed to change having been elected and Denis now taking his place amongst a new executive committee we are confident we can play our part supporting the executive as they lead the organisation in the right direction.”

Most recently Chef de Mission of the Irish team at the 2016 Paralympic Games; Toomey, who hails from Cork, is a committed and experienced sports administrator having served as President of Cycling Ireland in 2013 & 2014. He was instrumental in founding and running Para-cycling in Ireland through many years as volunteer, and has significant Paralympic Games experience from 2004 through to 2016.
