Kilruane fall to impressive Killenaule

Killenaule 2-24

Kilruane MacDonaghs 3-16

Kilruane MacDonaghs county championship hopes appear to be reliant on winning the North title after suffering their second successive group stage defeat at the hands of an impressive Killenaule side on Saturday.

MacDonaghs could still finish in second place on score difference should they beat Eire Og Annacarty in the final round and Killenaule fall to Toomevara. The first part of that equation is a possibility but the latter could be the problem if the South champions repeat the form on display here, particularly in attack where they had too much ability and scoring power for a Kilruane side that never really got into full flow.

Despite Jerome Cahill nudging Kilruane into an early lead, the warning signs were quickly there for the North side as Kieran Bergin would be a thorn in their side all evening with the former Tipp star scoring 1-1 in the first two minutes, finishing with a total of 1-7 from play from full forward as he gave Seamus Hennessy a torrid 37 minutes before the full back was called ashore. In fairness to Hennessy, Bergin was in one of those moods where everything that came in his direction stuck and everything he hit went between the posts from all angles.

If that wasn’t bad enough, John O’Dwyer was up for the game at centre forward as he quickly got on the scoresheet, the first of ten, five from play but his overall contribution, including ball-winning was impressive. Eoin Barry was also among the early scorers for Killenaule whose movement was causing Kilruane all sorts of problems.
