Conor Floyd’s last minute point gave Newport a timely win when defeating Silvermines in the second round of the Seamus O’Riain Cup last Saturday evening.

Floyd’s winner helped Newport back to a needed win following their opening round defeat to Clonakenny, with Silvermines suffering their first loss having accounted for Templederry. The results this week sees the four teams on two points each as Templederry defeated Clonakenny in the other game last weekend with a finely poised final round in prospect.

In a disappointing encounter, Newport just about deserved their win because they had the greater all round team in terms of scorers with eight different players on the scoresheet. Silvermines had two less and depended so much on Jason Forde who finished the games top scorer with 0-11, including five frees and two sideline balls, both from the same position inside two minutes in a man of the match performance.
