Under 21 now a strong guide to future success

TIPPERARY v LIMERICK

Semple Stadium, Thurles

Thursday 21st June

Throw-in @ 7.30pm (E.T.)

Referee: Rory McGann (Clare)

Since Tipperary's last Munster Under 21 Championship success in 2010, Clare, Limerick and Waterford have dominated the grade.

Clare and Limerick have claimed Corn na Cásca on three occasions each while Waterford's broke their dominance in 2016. Of those seven provincial championships, six were turned into All Ireland titles with Limerick in 2011 the only year since 2008 that the All Ireland hasn't come back to the southern province.

Indeed in each of the last six under 21 championships, Tipperary have been knocked out by the subsequent winners, many of them by narrow margins so while they haven't been that far away from success, winning those tight games has followed onto senior level in that time.

Those successes for Clare, Limerick and Waterford have also provided the platform for upturn in fortunes at senior level and now comes the time in which Tipperary badly need some of that.

The Premier County's early exit from the Munster senior championship has put more focus on the under 21's and the potential future senior players that might infuse some badly needed freshness into a squad that looks to have gone a little stale over the last two years.
