Ormond playoff push continues with impressive win
(06/02/2010)

AIB All Ireland League Division 3
   Nenagh Ormond 30 Instonians 21

Nenagh Ormond remain on course to reach the end of season playoffs after producing a gutsy display to get the better of playoffchasing rivals Instonians at Lisatunny on Saturday afternoon.
With five regular season games remaining, Nenagh have their destiny in their own hands sitting in fourth place and their run-in is favourable also with their next game being the rearranged fixture against the divisions whipping boys Co. Carlow where Nenagh will aim to secure the maximum five points.
In front of a large and vocal crowd, who got great value for money from a very good, open and free flowing game with both sides looking to attack at every opportunity.
There existed a bit of trepidation as to whether Nenagh would be able to bounce back after the tough defeat against Queens the previous week. Indeed the first 10 minutes was all Instonians, as they pushed to break Nenagh’s resolve. They moved the ball very wide on occasions and only some strong Nenagh defence kept them   out.
Nenagh appeared to have weathered the storm but a kick through by the Instonians full back Josh Devitt was not gathered properly and a kick and chase ensued with winger Chris Morgan touching down with Gary Clothworthy adding the extras.
Nenagh bounced back promptly and were rewarded with the first of penalties from David Delaney. A further penalty reduced the margin to the minimum as Nenagh found their stride.
The Nenagh back row of O’Callaghan, Slattery and Williams were very effective at the breakdown and had Instonians all sorts of trouble. Nenagh benefited from a bit of mishandling by the Instonians full back Devitt and James Kingston was on hand to gather the touch down to give Nenagh a 11-7 lead.
However as has been their Achilles heel, they took their eye off the ball almost immediately and a position in their own half Instonians made a break which were very well taken on by their hooker and off loaded to Dave Bradford who scored under the posts with Clothworthy adding the conversion to give the visitors a 14-11 lead at half   time.
Nenagh got into their stride far quicker in the second half and were rewarded with a penalty immediately to level the game. However almost immediately a Nenagh   player was blocked down and Josh Devitt touched down under the posts with Clothworthy again converting.
Nenagh added a further penalty to narrow the margin before their pressure was rewarded after some free flowing movements saw Ger Hermse cross the   line with David Delaney converting to edge Nenagh three points in front.
The home side started to dominate the game territorially and put more pressure on the Instonians forwards. Nenagh scrum was dominant although the lineout did not function as well. Two further penalties   from David Delaney secured the victory and joint third position in the division.
This was a very strong performance by a Nenagh side who were gaining in confidence despite the recent disappointment against Queens. There is a break now to the next fixture   on February 13th when Nenagh travel to Co. Carlow for the rearranged game.
