Ireland call up for Templederry trio
(30/05/2009)

On the 14th of December, three of Templederry’s finest young athletes will represent their country at the highest level that the game of racquetball has to offer.
Darragh Carey, Elaine Murphy and Aisling Carey will be part of a 17 strong Irish team that will travel to the Dominican Republic where they will face the game’s elite at the World Junior Championships. They become the first Templederry players since 1999 to represent Ireland at Junior International level which is a just reward   for the players themselves for their dedication to training and the game over the last 2-3 years and indeed to the club as a whole who have been doing tremendous work in the promotion of the game and sport in general over the past number of years. All 3 players are National Champions in their own   age-groups. A natural citóg, Darragh is one of the most promising young players in the country at the moment. His ability to read the game and his superb selection of shots for a player so young are amongst his striking features and is widely tipped to be a major force in the domestic games in the coming years.
Since the beginning of the current season, not many players countrywide have showed the desire and determination as Elaine has to part of this International set-up. She stormed through the team trials in hugely impressive form and topped the group   to book her place on the plane to the Caribbean Islands.
Aisling is regarded by many as one of the most talented young players to hit the courts in many years. Her overall skill level has not been seen in a   player so young for many years now. In the Worlds, she will be playing in the 10+Under age group and to prove the calibre of player that she is, she’s eligible to participate in this age-group again next year. As well as the 3 players making their International debuts, our club also have the honour of having the head coach of the team in our midst. Christy Slattery is no stranger to the International stage having competed as a player for many years both on the World and European levels. He has also coached the International Junior team on 2 previous occasions in 1998 & 1999 where he led them to a fourth place finish, the highest ever finish for an Irish Junior team.
It’s a great honour for our club to be so well represented at this level of the game.
