Bronze for Patrick Naughton
(31/07/2010)

Nenagh’s oldest athlete Patrick Naughton has again hit the headlines for his success in international competition.

He is seen here (right) on winner’s podium at the recent European Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Hungary after taking the bronze medal in the high jump for competitors over 75 years of age.

Pat, who will be 78 in September, was at a bit of disadvantage in that many of those competing against him were almost three years his junior. Yet he was happy to secure a medal and is now looking forward to competing in the All Ireland Masters Championships in August.
No stranger on the international athletics stage, he won the bronze in the high jump at the European Indoors Championships in Italy last year and the previous year won silver in the pentathlon in the Eurropean Outdoors in Slovenia.

He has competed in athletics for over seventy years and fifty years ago recorded his third win of the National senior decathlon event.
