Lorraine and Barry Cahalan looking forward to your visit to their sheep cheese farm near Terryglass this Saturday.

Open day on sheep cheese farm near Terryglass

A couple from outside Terryglass who make an award winning cheese with milk from their own sheep herd are having an open day this Saturday, July 14th, where members of the public can see how the cheese is made.

Barry and Lorraine Cahalan started milking Friesland ewes in 2013. They outsourced the manufacturing of the cheese to award winning cheesemaker Marion Roeleveld from Killeen Farmhouse cheese.

The cheese was then returned to the Cahalan's farm where it was aged and distributed. The cheese production has grown every year and Barry and Lorraine felt it was time to master the process themselves.

With the help of LEADER funding, they erected a manufacturing plant onsite and are now well into their first year of production. They are also branching out to flavour added cheese – added chives and garlic, cumin seed and Italian herbs - which they hope to have available for the Christmas market.

They are holding an Open Day as part of The Taste of Lough Derg, this Saturday at 10.30am. People will have an opportunity to see every aspect of the enterprise - from the ewes, the milking process, cheese manufacturing process and cheese tasting experience. All our welcome but please book in advance by contacting 087-2274789.
