Pupls from St Mary's Convent Primary School presenting their project in Maynooth

Top prize for Nenagh school

Saint Mary’s Convent Primary School was awarded first prize at primary level recently in the prestigious National Trócaire Oscar Romero Awards.

The Trócaire Romero Award acknowledges the work that young people do as they investigate, discuss and reflect on global justice issues.

Pupils from Fifth Class and their teacher Ms Ann Marie O’Sullivan were invited to the University of Maynooth on May 15th to showcase their project, entitled; 'Children Fighting Climate Injustice’. Their project was commended by the Executive Director of Trócaire, Mr Eamon Meehan, and the St Mary’s pupils were awarded first prize for their innovative and inspiring entry.

Through engaging with this project, the pupils learned all about Trócaire’s work and they answered the call to raise awareness on a global justice issue linked to the work of Trócaire. For their efforts the pupils received a plaque and voucher to spend facilitating their continued development education endeavours.

Today, Trócaire aims to continue the vision of Oscar Romero, an outspoken champion of the poor, for people to live in dignity, to feed themselves and their families, and to speak the truth without fear. The Romero Award is a testimony to the continued commitment of St Mary’s to foster and encourage our Mercy ethos of an awareness of global interdependence.
