Rescue challenge at Nenagh Fire Station

The public is invited to come and watch emergency service personnel taking part in a national rescue challenge at Nenagh Fire Station this Saturday.

Rescue Organisation Ireland (ROI) is a voluntary organisation and a registered charity that was founded by members of the Irish Fire & Emergency Services as a means of improving, updating and standardising the training of emergency service personnel (in particular the Fire Service) who regularly respond and deal with road traffic collisions (RTCs) on Ireland's roads. Every year ROI holds a national challenge event, which is focused on RTC extrication and trauma scenarios. These events are hosted in different locations around Ireland, in conjunction with the particular fire authority, as a means of promoting casualty-centred training and the 'challenge concept' in all corners of Ireland.

Tipperary Fire & Rescue has agreed to host the 2018 National Challenge, with the event taking place on Saturday April 21st at Nenagh Fire Station.

The challenge will consist of two elements: an Extrication Challenge, which aims to see all of the participating teams use their professional skill and ability in the extrication of a trapped casualty or multiple casualties from a severely damaged vehicle; and a Trauma Challenge, which aims to see all of the participating teams use their professional skill and ability in the treatment of one or more people suffering from severe trauma in just 10 minutes.

In this the tenth anniversary year of Rescue Organisation Ireland, we are very excited to have teams and assessors from Meath, Kildare, Dublin, Wicklow, Laois and Dublin Airport Fire Services, together with Order of Malta, Civil Defence, An Garda Síochána and some of the private rescue training providers from across the country.  We are particularly delighted to be hosting visiting teams and assessors from Portugal, Spain, France and Romania in a truly international event proudly hosted in Nenagh Fire Station. This international dimension is maintained for the top Irish teams at this event, who will then have the opportunity to go on and represent Ireland and ROI at the World Rescue Challenge 2018, which takes place this year in Cape Town, South Africa in October.

This event offers an opportunity for you to witness up close, in a very controlled environment, the type of work that our fire-fighters undertake when dealing with road traffic collisions. Dave Carroll, Chief Fire Officer, Tipperary Fire & Rescue Service, is welcoming all to drop in over the course of this Saturday to see the teams in action. The event will run from 8.30am until 5pm. It will be followed by a prize-giving dinner at The Thatched Cottage in Ballycommon on Saturday at 7.30pm.
