CCTV plan for Ballina

The addition of a CCTV surveillance scheme to the twin towns of Ballina and Killaloe was discussed at a recent meeting between Tipperary and Clare councils.

Director of Nenagh Municipal District Marcus O'Connor said there is a Government scheme that requires a 40% contribution from the local community. Responding to questions from Cllr Phyll Bugler (FG), Mr O'Connor said Nenagh's CCTV scheme cost €50,000, so a scheme for Ballina-Killaloe would be in the region of €30-40,000.

Director of Killaloe Municipal District Anne Haugh said there is a grant available from the Government. The application must be advanced by a well established community group and approved by gardaí and the Joint Policing Committee.

Several councillors voiced criticism of the 40% funding demand on a community group. But Cllr Pat Burke (FG) suggested that the local authorities should write to the Department requesting a CCTV scheme at half the cost to the local community.

The matter was discussed at meeting in Ballina between members of the Killaloe and Nenagh Municipal Districts.
