Nenagh film on show at Ormond cinema

'Twice Shy', the coming-of-age-drama written and directed by local filmmaker Tom Ryan, is currently being screened at the Ormond Cineplex, Nenagh.

The new independent Irish film, partly shot in Nenagh, follows a young couple as they go to London so the woman can have an abortion following an unplanned pregnancy.

Directed by Tom Ryan, a son of Philip and Rita Ryan of Melrose, Nenagh, proprietors of the well known business Philip's Furniture, 'Twice Shy' stars Shane Murray Corcoran (known for 'King Arthur' and 'Angela's Ashes') and Iseult Casey, who makes her film debut.

Although fundamentally a story about young love, 'Twice Shy' sets out to explore how leaving home to have an abortion overseas can affect a relationship. The film charts the ups and downs of their relationship by juxtaposing their dramatic journey to the abortion clinic with flashbacks to happier times in their romance.

 

Tom, who won the award for Best Young Director at the Irish Film Festival Australia for ‘Twice Shy’, said he hoped his film would convey its subject matter in a relevant, non-judgemental manner. 'Twice Shy' is Tom’s second film, following his very well received debut, 'Trampoline'.

The film is produced by London-based Fionn Greger. It was recorded in Nenagh, Dublin and London over just 20 days.

 

There’s a strong supporting cast, with Ardal O’Hanlon, Pat Shortt, and TV stars Mary Conroy ('Ros na Rún') and Paul Ronan ('Love/Hate') making appearances. O’Hanlon and Shortt play the main characters’ fathers. The film also boasts a soundtrack with some of Ireland’s top musical talents including Ash, Gavin James, Republic of Loose and The Corrs.

 

It has been screening at numerous film festivals across the globe since its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh last year.

 

'Twice Shy' premiered at the Ormond Cineplex in Nenagh last Sunday and it runs daily until next Tuesday (see ormondcineplex.com for more details).
