Headstone Unveiling for Bloody Sunday Victim

Uachtarán CLG Aogán Ó Fearghail attended a special ceremony in Dublin’s Glasnevin Cemetery on Saturday last, for the unveiling of a headstone on the grave of Croke Park Bloody Sunday victim, Daniel Carroll.

Last weekend marked the 96th anniversary of the events that became known as Bloody Sunday when British Forces opened fire on the crowd at Croke Park during a Dublin-Tipperary Gaelic football match on November 21st, 1920.

There were 14 people killed and hundreds more injured.

Daniel Carroll was a 30 year-old originally from Templederry in Tipperary who was living and working in Dublin as a barman in Kennedy’s of Drumcondra.

He was shot in the leg and died of his wounds two days later.

He is also one of several victims from Bloody Sunday who have been in unmarked graves ever since those tragic events.

The GAA, in conjunction with the surviving relatives of Jane Boyle, unveiled a headstone on her final resting place in Glasnevin to mark the 95th anniversary a year ago.

That event led to the formation of a Bloody Sunday Graves Project which has been supported by the GAA’s Coiste Bainistíochta.

Last summer saw a headstone unveiled on the final resting place of another victim, Dubliner James Teehan.

Daniel Carroll is the third victim to finally have their grave appropriately acknowledged and Saturday’s unveiling was organised by Daniel Carroll’s surviving relatives, with support from the GAA.
