Tipperary schools urged to support Mental Health Awareness Week

This year, Walk in My Shoes Radio is looking to set the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest mindfulness lesson

Walk in my Shoes is calling on all Tipperary secondary schools, and those in 5th and 6th classes in primary schools, to join in on setting the record on World Mental Health Awareness Day, the station’s first day on air, Monday the 10th October.

Participating schools in Tipperary will attempt to set the world record with a national 30 minute mindfulness session, which will take place on the morning of the 10th of October at 07:30am. The world record attempt will be broadcast live on TV3’s Ireland AM.

Ireland’s only all-digital pop-up radio station, was launched yesterday by a host of mental health advocates, celebrity ambassadors and well-known presenters.

The station will broadcast live from St Patrick’s University Hospital from Monday 10th – Friday 14th October to mark World Mental Health Awareness Week. It is the only pop-up radio station dedicated to promoting positive mental health.

The overall aim of Walk in My Shoes Radio is to encourage listeners to become involved in the conversation around mental health. Positive mental health and wellbeing should be a priority in all of our lives.

Walk in My Shoes Radio has an important message, taking action early by seeking support and professional advice to deal with mental health issues is vital.

The mindfulness class will be taught by a mindfulness practitioner in the lecture hall at St Patrick’s University Hospital and the 30 minute class will be broadcast as a Google Hangout connecting participating schools in Tipperary and all over the country.

Speaking at the launch event, Paul Gilligan, CEO of St Patrick’s Mental Health Services, said; “Walk in My Shoes Radio is an extremely important platform for St Patrick’s Mental Health Services, allowing us to connect with people all over the country to highlight the importance of seeking support and professional advice as early as possible, if you are struggling with a mental health difficulty. Our pop-up station is a small step in encouraging a dialogue about mental health that is free from stigma.  We believe that encouraging people to support the station, and indeed the Guinness World Record attempt, will certainly help in opening the conversation about the importance of looking after your mental health.”
