Meeting hears of crime decrease in Tipp

Last month's quarterly meeting of the County Tipperary Joint Policing Committee (JPC) heard of an overall reduction of crime in Tipperary.

The meeting took place at the Old School, The Commons, Ballingarry. Committee members heard presentations from An Garda Síochána on the latest crime statistics in the county; from a representative of the South East Regional Drugs and Alcohol Task Force; and on the gardaí’s work on public CCTV developments around the county.

Other issues raised by members during a lively discussion with the representatives of An Gardaí Síochána attending the meeting included unauthorised sulky horse racing on public roads and the excellent take-up of text alert and community alert schemes.

Cllr Roger Kennedy, Chairperson of the JPC, and other members of the committee complimented the gardaí on the work they are doing to make the county a safer place. “The engagement that is being carried out by members of An Garda Síochána within our communities is paying off with overall levels of criminal activity in the county on the decrease,” said Cllr Kennedy.

“The one negative in the figures presented to us today is fatal road traffic accidents continuing to increase in our county.” All members of the committee were united in their call for everyone to play their part in eliminating these deaths. “Every life lost is one too many”, said Cllr Kennedy.

Meetings of the committee are rotated around the council’s five Municipal Districts. The function of a JPC is to serve as a forum for consultations, discussions and recommendations on matters affecting the policing of Co Tipperary. Its membership comprises Oireachtas members, elected members and officials of Tipperary County Council, the Chief Superintendent of the Tipperary Garda Division and representatives from the community and business sectors.
