Newtown and Portroe to mark 1916

Plaques are to be installed in the villages of Newtown and Portroe towards the end of this year to commemorate the people of 1916.

A fundraising night for this venture is to take place at Reidy's of Newtown on Saturday October 1st from 9.30pm. Promising to be a great night of music and entertainment, the event will also give people a chance to have their input into the plaques.

This initiative is organised by the local Cooney-Gleeson Sinn Féin cumann. Killoran Slate has generously donated two slabs for the plaques in each village. It is proposed that an Easter Lilly would be emblazoned on the stones along with a message in dedication to all in the local parishes who have been involved in the struggle for freedom.

Anyone who wants to find out more about this initiative is invited to contact Teresa Collins at 087-1095245.

A great night awaits at Reidy's on October 1st with music from Na Reá Doree of Carlow. There will also be food, spot prizes, and a prize draw with a top cash prize of €200, €100 for second and €50 for third. Sponsorship cards are also doing the rounds at the moment, and all contributions will go towards this 1916 commemoration for Newtown and Portroe.
