Good news for Borrisokane

The long-awaited resurfacing of Borrisokane's Main Street is confirmed to take place next year.

Director of Tipperary Co Council's Nenagh Municipal District Marcus O'Connor told local councillors last week that the Borrisokane street renewal scheme has been specifically mentioned in Transport Infrastructure Ireland's programme for 2017. Although the TII (formerly the National Roads Authority) has not mentioned any figure for the scheme, the fact that it is now included in the programme is good news, Mr O'Connor said.

The director added that the council has engaged a consultant to prepare a public consultation process for the scheme and this is almost finished.

Cllr Ger Darcy (FG) welcomed this progress and said the plans for Borrisokane should be put on display in the town. He said the plans should be on display in the local library.

Mr O'Connor said the plans would be ready to go on display in the coming weeks. They would be available at the Civic Offices in Nenagh but the council would have no problem displaying them at Borrisokane Library as well, he said.

Cllr John Carroll (FF) wondered if the Borrisokane street works would extend down to Bushy Park Nursing Home, where he said the road is in bad need of repair. There is a similar need for works at Ballyhaden, Cllr Carroll said.

Mr O'Connor said the council will be carrying out improvement works on a 500m section of road at Ballyhaden in the direction of Birr. These works are to take place in the current year. Mr O'Connor confirmed that the council also wants to link the Main St renewal works with the Ardcroney approach to the town.

Cllr Joe Hannigan (Ind) pointed out that there is also a need to repair the side roads off the Main Street. But Mr O'Connor said a different source of funding would have to be found for these streets, which will not be funded by the TII.
