Cllr Michael Smith (FF)

Tourist office opens in roscrea

Local councillor Michael Smith opened Roscrea's first tourist information centre on Castle Street last Monday.

Cllr Smith, who spearheaded the project, spoke at the launch: 'This office offers the town a unique opportunity to grow and develop a sustainable tourism market, attracting visitors to the town.

'Roscrea has a proud and ancient history going back centuries, and today we co-ordinate various agencies and initiatives, which are currently trying to push this area as a tourism town.'
The office will open from 11am to 5pm Monday to Friday and will supply details on booking accommodation, places to eat and visit, routes to take, things to do and information on local events, as well as maps, and guidebooks.

Cllr Smith acknowledged the great work and help from North Tipperary Leader Partnership and Roscrea Chamber of Commerce, stating: 'Without the assistance of Tús co-ordinator John Bonfield and the local business chamber, the project may not have been as successful. The office will be staffed by Pamela Aitken and Debra Durack, who will be promoting tourism in this town and highlighting the many significant features and amenities we have to offer.'
