Workshop in thurles on 1916 rising commemorations

In 2016, we will commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising. As part of the Ireland 2016 national programme being co-ordinated by the Department of Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Tipperary County Council is developing an action plan to commemorate the people and events of 1916 and their impact on the history and development of Tipperary.

The Ireland 2016 programme is based on 5 themes: Remembering, Reconciling, Presenting, Imagining and Celebrating. Each workshop will feature a summary of the national programme for Ireland 2016 including the 7 programme strands:State Ceremonial, Historical Reflection, An Teanga Beo, Youth & Imagination, Cultural Expression, Community Participation and Global and Diaspora.

The workshop will take place in The Anner Hotel, Thurles this Thursday June 18th at 7.30pm. This will be followed by an open discussion on how the period should be commemorated in Tipperary. Anyone with an interest on how we commemorate this event in our history is welcome to participate.

Minister Alan Kelly will be attending, together with John Concannon, the Director of Ireland 2016, who will be presenting the national plans for 2016.  In light of the enthusiasm and ideas that emerged at the previous workshops that took place in Tipperary, it promises to be a very interesting and engaging session.
