Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation, Damien English TD, announced yesterday that 9 Tipperary primary schools will receive the Science Foundation Ireland Discover Primary Science and Maths (DPSM) Award of Science and Maths Excellence.

The recipients in Tipperary are Killenaive National School, Scoil Náisiúnta Muire Na nAingeal, Presentation Primary School, Our Lady of Mercy Girls' National School, St Mary's Central National School, Rearcross National School, Gaelscoil Aonach Urmhumhan, St Peter and Paul's Primary School and Lackamore National School.

Of the 549 recipients of this prestigious award, 25 schools, including St Mary's Central National School from Tipperary, will receive their 10th Award of Science and Maths Excellence, and will be presented with a prize from Abbott Ireland.

The programme is aimed at sparking curiosity in the minds of young children to give them an appreciation and love for science and maths in the hope that they study a related course at third level.

Commenting on the announcement, Minister English said the increase in participation by schools in the DPSM Awards programme is a 'testament to the effectiveness that this initiative brings science and maths into the lives of children in a really meaningful, accessible and enjoyable way.”

Niamh Lyons, director of communication, education and public engagement for Science Foundation Ireland, similarly praised the programme as having “the potential to spark a curiosity that could end up in a lifelong interest or career for many.

Ms.Lyons congratulated the 9 Tipperary schools receiving awards and urged other schools around the country to get involved in the programme in September.
