Live register down 8 in north tipp

The number of people signing on the Live Register in North Tipperary decreased by almost 8% between the end of 2013 and 2014. However, and in contrast to the general situation nationally, the numbers signing on here increased sharply last month, particularly in Nenagh.

The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office show that a total of 6,271 people signed on the Live Register last December compared to 6,796 in December 2013, a decrease of 7.73%. Of these, 3,467 were male and 2,804 were female. This compares to 4,019 males and 2,957 females at the end of last year. A total of 936 people under the age of 25 signed on in North Tipperary at the end of 2014 compared to 1,062 in December 2013.

As with 2013 however, the CSO figures show that the number of those signing on increased between November and December last year. Nenagh’s social welfare office saw an extra 56 people join the queue in December, bringing a total figure of 2,542. Roscrea and Thurles also recorded increases of 30 and 39 people respectively.

Roscrea’s social welfare office had 1,193 people on the Live Register at the end of 2014 while Thurles had 2,536. County Tipperary as a whole had over 14,000 people on the Live Register in December, an increase of 300 on the previous month, but again representing a decrease on the end of 2013 figure.
