Lissenhall House, seat of the Carroll family, features in 'Mining the Past' Volume 3.

Launch of third silvermines history book

PRIDE of place and a reverence for the past has been demonstrated in volumes by the Silvermines Historical Society which, this week, publishes its third book in as many years.
'Mining the Past' Volume 3 will be launched in The Eagle’s Nest, Dolla, on this Friday, November 21st, by Nenagh writer and historian, Donal A Murphy. It follows two previous publications which proved extremely popular with Silvermines people at home and abroad, and which practically sold out within weeks of being launched. This latest production provides another enthralling glimpse of the characters and events that marked the history of the parish and its hinterland.
The aim of the SHS, which was formed just three years ago, is to collect and preserve local history that might otherwise be lost. This year’s fascinating collection of stories, folklore and poetry makes another huge contribution towards the fulfillment of that ideal.  Topics range from murder and threatening letters in the 19th century to memories of the Mogul mining era, and come from every corner of the parish and further afield. Included also is a fine collection of interesting photographs contributed by many local people.
Published by The Nenagh Guardian, 'Mining the Past' is priced at €10 and would make an excellent gift this Christmas for friends or family anyplace in the world.  There will be a special deal for the launch night of five books for €40.
Everyone is welcome on Friday, November 21st (8.30pm). It is always a great social occasion with light refreshments served, as friends and old acquaintances meet and greet.
