County tipperary taking part in ms readathon 2014

Young readers in County Tipperary are now in the final stages of the MS READaTHON, supporting vital services for people with multiple sclerosis locally. Overall, Irish authors are urging young readers to ‘have fun, escape and be adventurous’.

Even as MS READaTHON closes, there are many great reasons for enjoying the world of books into the winter months. The reading month for the 27th MS READaTHON officially began on Friday October 10th 2014. Almost 500 schools across the country are taking part this year.

MS READaTHON asked Ireland’s leading authors for the lowdown on reading in 2014. They include children’s authors Sarah Webb, Judi Curtin, Oisin McGann, Nicola Pierce, Alan Early, Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick, Louise O’'Neill, Paula Leyden and novelists Marisa Mackle, Anna McPartlin, Claudia Carroll, Sheila O’'Flanagan, Roisin Meaney, as well as UK author Francesca Simon of ‘Horrid Henry’ fame.

According to Sarah Webb, author of the popular Ask Amy Green series for age 10 years plus, it’s important to: “Pick books that you know you’ll enjoy. Select lots of shorter books as well as longer ones and don’t forget non-fiction. Above all, have fun!”

MS READaTHON is Ireland’s longest running, schools sponsored reading initiative. Last year more than 14,500 children and young teens in schools across the country took part to raise funds for vital services for people with multiple sclerosis in their region.

An estimated 8,000 people have MS in Ireland, with thousands more family members affected. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease and is the most common disabling neurological condition affecting young adults in Ireland.
