Sheeps cheese from terryglass

An award winning cheese made from the milk of herd of sheep in Terryglass is proving to be very popular with consumers since it came on the market last year.

Cáis na Tíre Sheep's Cheese is the brainchild of Barry and Lorraine Cahalan, a married couple, and both 26, living on the outskirts of the picturesque village, renowned for twice winning the National Tidy Towns Competition.

Honours graduates of Agriculture Science from University College Dublin in 2010, Barry and Lorraine produce appears to be going down a treat despite being just new to the market; the cheese won two bronze medals at the Irish Cheese Awards earlier this year.

But why opt for milking sheep for cheese in a country were cheese from cows milk is much more popular? 'We looked at dairying but it was very expensive to get into, and we also looked at goats, but the market was a bid crowded. So the only other option was sheep,' says Lorraine.
