66 people in tipp living with a spinal cord injury

A report released this week by Spinal Injuries Ireland, reveals a high level of exclusion in the employment market for people with a spinal cord injury (SCI) with over 76% unemployed compared to a 35% unemployment rate before injury. A further statistic shows that 40% of people with SCI are living at or below the poverty line.

In Tipperary, sixty six people are living with a spinal cord injury according to Shona McCarthy, the local Community Liaison Officer for Spinal Injuries Ireland. “While this may not sound like many, a spinal cord injury is acknowledged as one of the most devastating and life changing injuries there is.” In Ireland, over 1600 people live with a spinal cord injury.

The research was commissioned by Spinal Injuries Ireland (SII) and was carried out under the guidance of Evaluation Psychologist Dr Katrina Collins and involved face to face interviews with 24% of people with SCI in Ireland. A broad range of data was collected from members about their life experiences as strategic intelligence for the organisation to develop a new 4 year strategy.
